The End
The End is a wolf in sheep’s clothing – a film that looks and feels a lot like a modern noir mystery, but hides inside of it a surprise, which burns in flames any conventional relationship an audience has with fictional cinema. The End is a light hearted existential horror film about Joseph, a curious school teacher with a pension for trouble. Clara, his detective friend, believes that his history of visions may help ensnare an elusive kidnapper. Half way into their mystery, Joseph has his most explosive vision yet. In a twist that turns on its ear the first half of the film - SPOILER ALERT - Joseph begins to see the audience and recognize his status as a fictional character in this very film... or, as Clara would have it, is misreading an insane delusion that could help catch the kidnapper. This paradox sparks odd, scary, even hilarious situations, culminating in one of the most unusual and satisfying chases in motion picture history. The End, thus begins as an old fashioned mystery, but gets turned around into an outragious and bizarre study of the fourth wall – a film which historic publisher Barney Rosset (Tropic of Cancer) calls “a most impressive work”.
